My Textile Artwork

Black quilting icon for Robyn J Designs.
I’m an award-winning textile artist living in Melbourne, creating intricate quilted artworks that fuse traditional textiles with the technology of lasercut wooden frames.

I have a variety of artworks and homewares on offer, as well as working on commissions and running online workshops.

Free-motion Quilting

Free-motion quilting is my passion, which is basically drawing with a needle. I push a large sewing machine around on a frame, painting with thread as I go. My stitching is all ‘hand-guided’, which means I always control the machine, it’s never run by a computer.

I present my work using laser-cut wooden frames, which I design and cut to reflect and enhance the quilted piece. This allows me to create unique artworks such as vases and sculptures which can’t usually be created using quilted works.
This combination of textile and woodwork adds a beautiful warmth and softness to your home. When you buy one of my artworks, you know that no other piece will ever be the same, this is something special, stitched by me, just for you.

All of my artwork pieces featured here, can be purchased in my online shop. Ever seen artwork you can wear? Alongside my artwork are my unique patchwork jewely and DIY jewelry kits. There’s something here for everyone with a love of quilting and art.

Commissioned Artwork

I understand how big an investment an artwork can be and how important it is that it’s just right. Sometimes you have a special place for an artwork and need it to be the perfect size, a certain colour or have a specific theme you’ve been dreaming of.

I love working with people to create pieces that work with their homes and lives. If you have an idea in mind, please talk to me about how we can make it a reality.

The cost for a commissioned artwork is the same as that as a pre-made artwork, on a size basis. We work together to create a design that you are happy with and once the design has been agreed upon, work can begin on creating your one-of-a-kind artwork.

My Process

Freemotion quilting is a deeply engaging process that I find immensely rewarding. It starts with selecting the right fabrics, threads, colors, and designs that align with the vision I have in mind for the piece. Once I have my materials ready, I set up my longarm sewing machine, which allows me to move the machine freely over the fabric as I stitch, much as one would a pen. This freedom of movement is where the magic happens, as I guide the machine to create intricate patterns, textures, and motifs.

The process requires a delicate balance of technique and intuition, adding layers of complexity to the design as I go along. Each stitch is a deliberate choice, contributing to the overall composition of the quilt and conveying the story or emotion I want to express.
When it comes to the lasercut frames, the process begins with designing the frame on a computer. Using specialized software, I fine-tune every detail, from the shape and size of the frame to the intricate patterns and designs within it. Once the design is perfected, it's time to bring it to life using my laser cutter. This cutting-edge technology allows for precise and intricate cuts, resulting in clean lines and detailed patterns that complement the freemotion quilting.

The final step is assembling the quilt within the lasercut frame, ensuring that every stitch and pattern aligns perfectly with the frame's design. The result is a stunning fusion of handmade artistry and modern craftsmanship, where traditional quilting techniques meet cutting-edge technology in a seamless and visually captivating way.

Online Workshops

Bubble Puffs – Fun with Trapunto

This course is great value with over 2 hours of design techniques, different fills, trapunto techniques, drawing and stitching videos, and so much more.
It covers all the material outlined above and allows you to do it all from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. While I do a lot of stitching on my longarm, the class applies equally to domestic machine quilters as well, and key techniques are demonstrated for this. There’s discussion areas within the course, to ask questions and share your work and ideas.

You will have access to this course for at least 12 months from the time of purchase, but my intention is that it will have lifetime access (or at least for as long as the platform is running).

I pleaded with Robyn to offer this class online, and I am thrilled that the class is now available! Robyn takes you through all the steps necessary to achieve her amazing puffs of color. She also provides clear drawing and quilting instruction for her favorite quilting motifs, her favorite background pattern, and tips on design and placement.

Robyn demonstrates with both a sewing machine and a longarm machine at each stage, and recommends the tools, threads, batting, and colors for best success.

Although it is geared toward those with quilting experience, her clear drawing exercises and her stitching demonstrations filmed in actual (slow) quilting speed are the best quilting motif demos I’ve seen. It is a superb addition to anyone’s quilt class library.
